Some queens inherit a throne. Nzinga fought for hers and held it for nearly forty years against one of the most powerful empires of her time.
Nzinga Mbande was born around 1583 in the Kingdom of Ndongo, in present day Angola. In 1622, she was sent to Luanda to negotiate peace with the Portuguese governor. In the famous story of that meeting, she was offered no chair, so a member of her court knelt to form a seat, and she spoke to the governor eye to eye as an equal. She left with a treaty and a reputation that would follow her for the rest of her life.
As queen of Ndongo and later Matamba, Nzinga used every tool she had. She formed alliances with the Dutch, welcomed people who escaped enslavement into her ranks, and personally led her armies in battle well into her sixties. When she died in 1663, she was still ruling, and Matamba remained independent.
