Queen Yaa Asantewaa "Warrior Queen"
She Rose When the Men Went Silent. The Queen Mother Who Defied an Empire.
$40.00
Queen Yaa Asantewaa was the Queen Mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire, in what is now Ghana. In 1900, the British colonial governor made a demand that shook the entire Ashanti nation. He wanted the Golden Stool, the most sacred symbol of Ashanti sovereignty, the spiritual throne that represented the soul of the Ashanti people. No one was supposed to sit on it. No one was supposed to touch it. And no foreign power was ever supposed to possess it.
The Ashanti chiefs sat in council. And they went silent.
Yaa Asantewaa rose to her feet and spoke directly to the men in that room. If you men will not go forward, then we will. We the women will. I shall call upon my fellow women. We will fight the white men. We will fight till the last of us falls in the battlefields.
She then organized and led the Ashanti army in what became known as the War of the Golden Stool. It was one of the last and most powerful wars of resistance against British colonialism on the entire African continent.
She Led. She Fought. She Won't Be Forgotten.
